Note

Henry James, the author of "Washington Sq", lived in Rye from 1898 at Lamb House. He owned the house until his death in 1916.

When this play was first performed, in 1949, at the Haymarket Theatre, London, the role of Morris Townsend was played by Aubrey's cousin, Donald Sinden. The star-studded cast also included Ralph Richardson, and the play was directed by John Gielgud. It is remarkable to note that no less than one third of this original cast and its director were later to receive knighthoods. So far as I know, no such honour has yet been bestowed on any of the Fairlight cast ... but we live in hopes!
